A former campaign aide to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio–Cortez, D–N.Y., is now a senior official within the New York State Communist Party, according to reports.
Justine Medina, 33, worked for Ocasio–Cortez’s campaign throughout 2020, earning around $35,000. She was then appointed as “Co–chair of the New York Communist League” by the People’s World, a publication of the Communist Party.
The publication now lists Medina as a member of the Executive Committee of the New York State Communist Party who is also active in the Amazon Labor Union at JFK8.
Medina’s old tweets, revealed by The New York Post, showed her proudly proclaiming her allegiance to communism.
“Well, I *am* a Communist, but work for AOC & helped start Queens DSA’s Electoral WG, so I def see utility in working on the Dem ballot line!” she tweeted in October 2020.
In another post, she described the ideology as being about “equality, democracy, peace, the advancement of workers, the oppressed and humanity in general,” adding that the path to communism will be “unkind” to those who “block progress.”
“But communism is good and shouldn’t scare you,” she said.
The news that a former aide to a prominent Democrat is now a senior official in the Communist Party has raised eyebrows, considering the bloody history of communism.
The Soviet Union’s communist dictator Joseph Stalin starved millions of Ukrainians in the 1930s, while China’s communist dictator Mao Zedong led the Cultural Revolution and Great Leap Forward, the death toll from which is estimated to have been above 40 million. In Cambodia, the Khmer Rouge communist leader, Pol Pot, imposed brutal programs during his brief rule in the 1970s that are estimated to have killed about one–fourth of his own country‘s population.
In response to The Post article, Medina posted on Twitter: “Friends, I have an announcement to make.” When asked about her specific brand of communism, she said she subscribed to “Marxist–Leninist–Robesonist” thought, a reference to Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, and Paul Robeson.
The revelation that a former Ocasio–Cortez aide is now a senior official within the New York State Communist Party has raised eyebrows and serious questions about the congresswoman’s judgment in choosing her staff.
It is also a clear reminder of the deadly history of communism, which has taken the lives of more than 100 million people in the twentieth century alone.
