Oh, the irony is so thick you could cut it with a butter knife. President Joe Biden used the solemn occasion of former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral to deliver what many saw as a thinly veiled jab at President-elect Donald Trump and his supporters. With lines about the “abuse of power” and a call to “give hate no safe harbor,” Biden seemed to frame his remarks as a eulogy for Carter’s legacy but couldn’t resist politicizing the moment.
To anyone paying attention, Biden’s comments seemed less about honoring Carter and more about scoring points with the political left. His references to dignity, respect, and standing against hate weren’t subtle.
Coming from a president whose allies have spent years labeling Trump and his supporters as existential threats to democracy, the subtext practically shouted from the podium. It was a nod to the ongoing narrative that paints Trump and his base as embodiments of everything Democrats claim to oppose.

But here’s where it gets rich: Biden and his allies accuse Trump of abusing power, yet their own actions over the past several years paint a very different picture. Democrats pursued a relentless series of legal attacks against Trump, including federal and state prosecutions, that were so transparently political even some left-leaning commentators acknowledged the ulterior motives. The timing of these cases—most of which conveniently began winding down after Trump’s victory in 2024—reeks of political opportunism.
A Quinnipiac poll from mid-2023 revealed that 62% of Americans believed the federal charges against Trump were politically motivated. That sentiment was shared by a staggering 91% of Republicans, 65% of independents, and even 28% of Democrats. The numbers don’t lie: most people saw through the charade.
And let’s not forget the Democrats’ attempt to weaponize the 14th Amendment to keep Trump off the ballot. The provision, originally designed to bar Confederate officials from holding office, was twisted beyond recognition in a failed bid to paint Trump’s actions on January 6 as “rebellion.” Courts in states like Colorado and Maine ultimately rejected the argument, but the spectacle underscored the left’s willingness to bend the Constitution for political gain.
Biden’s remarks about Carter teaching him the importance of character would have been more compelling if his own party’s conduct hadn’t been riddled with the very abuses of power he decried.
Whether it was leveraging the justice system to sideline a political rival or attempting to rewrite constitutional provisions, Democrats have shown a remarkable aptitude for the very tactics they claim to abhor.
