As former President Donald Trump continues to make headlines with his recent public appearances, the liberal left is once again up in arms. This time, the target of their ire is the Spanish-language network Univision for hosting an interview with the controversial figure.
Long known for its left-leaning views, Univision is facing backlash from celebrities and even some members of the corporate press for daring to feature Trump on their network. However, it seems that the outrage is not shared by the viewers, as Trump’s interview drew in significant numbers for the struggling network.
This is not the first time that Trump’s presence on a major network has caused a stir. In May, CNN hosted a town hall with Trump, which was met with a similar backlash from their own employees. Although some CNN personalities spoke out against the event, veteran correspondent Christiane Amanpour’s scathing critique led to the downfall of then-network CEO Chris Licht.
But as the left continues to denounce Trump and his ideas, they seem to overlook one important factor –he is still a major draw for viewers. Despite the outcry over his past comments on Mexicans and immigration policies, Trump’s popularity cannot be denied. And it seems that Univision, like any other network, is simply trying to capitalize on that.
However, celebrities like actor John Leguizamo are calling for a boycott of Univision, accusing the network of betraying its Spanish-speaking viewers by giving a platform to someone with such controversial views. Leguizamo even went as far as to pen an opinion piece for the LA Times, urging his fellow actors, artists, politicians, and activists to stay away from Univision.
The Washington Post also reported on the growing backlash against Univision, with major Latino advocacy groups and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus among those protesting the Trump interview.
Even the hosts of The View couldn’t resist chiming in on the controversy, with co-host Ana Navarro calling for Latinos to hold Univision accountable. However, is it fair to silence a major figure and voice of a significant portion of the population simply because his views do not align with those of the left?
In the land of the free, democracy requires a fair and balanced media and a robust exchange of ideas. By attempting to cancel and censor Trump’s presence on networks like Univision, the left is going against these principles. While it is entirely valid to disagree with someone’s views and statements, it is not acceptable to try to silence them completely.
As the debate continues to rage on, it is essential to remember that the American way is to allow for diverse perspectives and opinions, even if they may be controversial. By attempting to shut down opposing voices, the left is only further perpetuating the divide in our already polarized society. It’s time to start listening and engaging in respectful dialogue instead of seeking to cancel and censor those we disagree with.
