DOJ Gives Updated In Ambush Case

Federal authorities have arrested eleven individuals in connection with what officials are calling a “planned ambush” targeting federal corrections officers at the Prairieland ICE detention facility in Alvarado, Texas. The violent attack occurred late on July 4, resulting in one Alvarado police officer being shot in the neck. The officer is expected to survive.

According to CBS News and federal prosecutors, the group arrived late Friday night wearing black, military-style clothing and masks. They reportedly vandalized security cameras and vehicles in the facility’s parking lot before launching fireworks—believed to be a deliberate attempt to lure officers into the open.

Acting U.S. Attorney Nancy Larson confirmed in a press conference Monday that the event was far from a spontaneous act of protest.

“This was a coordinated and targeted ambush with the clear intent to kill federal officers. This was not a peaceful demonstration. It was an act of calculated violence,” she stated.

Ten of the suspects have been charged with three counts of attempted murder of a federal officer and three counts of discharging a firearm in relation to a crime of violence. If convicted, each faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years in federal prison, with a maximum penalty of life.

An eleventh suspect has been charged with obstruction of justice and conspiracy, accused of attempting to destroy or conceal evidence related to the attack. That individual faces up to ten years in prison.

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche addressed the broader implications of the incident on July 5, stating on social media:

“The Department has zero tolerance for assaults on federal officers or property and will bring the full weight of the law against those responsible.”

The Department of Justice is also monitoring a separate attack on an ICE facility in Portland, Oregon, indicating that these events may be part of a coordinated escalation in violence against immigration enforcement agencies.

The suspects have not yet been publicly identified, and investigations remain ongoing. Prosecutors described the attack as part of a larger anti-ICE extremist movement, citing the suspects’ tactics—military-style coordination, fireworks as distractions, and surveillance system disruption—as indicative of pre-planned intent to do harm.

Authorities recovered weapons, body armor, radios, and evidence of logistical planning, further confirming the operation’s deliberate nature. While more details are expected as indictments are processed, officials have made clear that this case will be pursued aggressively.
