Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, is under investigation by the Justice Department, with lawyers for the former vice president‘s son set to meet with federal prosecutors next week.
According to multiple sources familiar with the case, Hunter Biden‘s lawyers have requested a status update on the investigation and have been invited to meet with US Attorney David Weiss and at least one senior career official from Justice Department headquarters in Washington.
The investigation, which is being led by Weiss, was opened last year and is looking into potential criminal charges of tax evasion, false statement, and failure to file taxes. Hunter Biden has denied any wrongdoing.
Now, the case is back in the spotlight after an IRS supervisory special agent reached out to Congress, claiming to have information about alleged mishandling and political interference in the case.
The agent reportedly believes Hunter Biden is being treated differently than other individuals would be in terms of violations of the tax code, and is seeking whistleblower protections to share the information with Congress.
The agent also claims to have information that contradicts Attorney General Merrick Garland‘s testimony before Congress, in which he said that Weiss had “full authority“ to carry out the investigation and to bring in another jurisdiction if necessary.
Hunter Biden‘s lawyers have adopted a more aggressive strategy to defend their client in recent months, including suing former Trump aide Garrett Ziegler and accusing a Delaware computer repair shop owner of trying to invade Hunter Biden‘s privacy and wrongfully sharing his personal data for political purposes.
However, sources close to Hunter Biden have questioned the motives of the IRS agent and noted that even if the whistleblower has evidence of the investigation being mishandled, it would be about government conduct and not about Hunter Biden.
As the meeting between Hunter Biden‘s lawyers and federal prosecutors is set to take place next week, it remains to be seen what kind of progress will be made in the case. For now, the only thing that is certain is that the Justice Department investigation is far from over.
