In 2007, Siebel Newsom, who was then the girlfriend of San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, faced backlash in the media for her statements about the mayor’s affair with his appointments secretary, Ruby Rippey-Tourk, who was also the wife of Newsom’s best friend.
In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle about her upcoming movie, Siebel Newsom made some shocking remarks about the affair, stating, “I shouldn’t say this, but there are two sides to every story,” and “the woman is the culprit.”
This victim-blaming and gaslighting behavior did not sit well with the public and received backlash from the media, including a mention in the blog SFist under the headline “Not a Girl’s Kind of Girl.” The article called out Siebel Newsom for her lack of support for Rippey-Tourk and her manipulative language.
Siebel Newsom, who was reportedly monitoring news about herself, was quick to respond to the blog with a lengthy comment, taking a defensive stance. Ironically, her attempt at damage control only worsened the situation, with Siebel Newsom making more accusatory and insulting remarks towards Rippey-Tourk.
She accused Rippey-Tourk of cheating on her husband multiple times and blamed Rippey-Tourk for Gavin’s behavior, stating, “I am not going to blindly support a woman who has cheated on her husband multiple times.” She also tried to downplay Gavin’s actions, calling them “a few nothing incidents” and implying that Rippey-Tourk was drunk and unable to give consent.
Siebel Newsom’s comments were met with further criticism, with many calling out her hypocrisy and insensitivity towards Rippey-Tourk’s struggles with addiction.
When the local ABC affiliate reached out to Siebel Newsom for a comment, she tried to downplay the situation, stating that she had “never blogged before” and that it was all “blown out of proportion.”
However, her actions and words were met with widespread condemnation, with many questioning her intentions and character. This incident from Siebel Newsom’s past has resurfaced, given her recent involvement in the Newsom’s political scandal involving Harvey Weinstein.
