Contestants on the long–running quiz show “Jeopardy!” left viewers in shock on Wednesday night when all three appeared unable to answer an elementary Bible knowledge–related question.
The clue, read aloud by host Mayim Bialik, asked the players: “MATTHEW 6:9 SAYS, ‘OUR FATHER WHICH ART IN HEAVEN‘, THIS ‘BE THY NAME.’” Not even the three–time–winners could offer an answer, prompting Bialik to give it – “Hallowed be thy name“ – as the correct response.
Twitter users expressed surprise that not one of the contestants could name the opening line of the Lord’s Prayer. “Can I admit to being genuinely shocked that not one Jeopardy! contestant recognized The Lord’s Prayer?” one tweet read.
Another tweet summed up the evening: “A clue that‘s essentially a fill–in–the–blank in the Our Father/Lord‘s Prayer, and it‘s a triple stumper.”
The missed answer prompted speculation that, far from being an isolated incident, it could be indicative of a broader issue in modern society. Someone tweeted the “very weak selection of Jeopardy contestants tonight…none of them knew the Lord‘s Prayer clue? I‘m an agnostic and knew that.”
Another pointed to the contestants’ performance being indicative of “today‘s Biden America.” They wrote, “Did anyone else notice that ALL THREE Jeopardy contestants tonight, couldn‘t even fill in the blank, one word, on the opening line of The Lord‘s Prayer? Kind of fits in today‘s Biden America. So sad.”
The anonymous tweeter added fuel to the fire, writing, “Y’all really ain’t know the first two lines of the Lord’s Prayer?!? #Jeopardy”
This isn’t the first time religious questions have cropped up on the show. And while contestants may not have expected “Jeopardy!” to delve into biblical lore, Wednesday night’s episode proves that, while schooling and schooling alone won’t answer life’s important questions, certain questions remain forever pertinent.
