MI Gov Whitmer May Run for President in 2028

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer managed to create political whiplash in the span of a single day.

On Thursday morning, the Democrat appeared to slam the door shut on any speculation about a 2028 presidential run. During an interview with Fox 2 Detroit, Whitmer sounded unequivocal.

“There will be a robust group of people running for president, and I will not be one of them in 2028. I can tell you that,” she said.

For anyone tracking the growing field of potential Democratic contenders, the statement seemed clear enough. Whitmer, one of the party’s most prominent governors and a frequent subject of White House speculation, appeared to be taking herself out of the conversation.

That certainty didn’t last long.

Just hours later, speaking at an annual gathering of Michigan business and civic leaders, Whitmer dramatically softened her position.

“I never thought I would run for governor, so I guess I should know better. Never say never,” she said, according to Michigan Live.

And just like that, a firm denial became an open question.

The reversal is likely to fuel even more speculation about Whitmer’s national ambitions. With her second term as governor winding down and Michigan’s term limits preventing her from seeking a third term, many political observers have viewed her as a potential contender for higher office once she leaves Lansing.

Whitmer has spent years building a national profile. During the COVID-19 pandemic she became one of the Democratic Party’s most recognizable governors, and she has remained a frequent presence in national political discussions ever since. She was also widely mentioned as a possible vice-presidential candidate during the 2024 election cycle.

Her mixed messaging comes as Democrats continue searching for the next generation of national leaders following the end of the Biden era. Several governors are already being discussed as possible 2028 candidates, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker.

Whether Whitmer ultimately enters the race remains unknown. But after first declaring she would not run and then cautioning people to “never say never” just hours later, she has ensured that the speculation surrounding her political future is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
