California Gov. Gavin Newsom told a national news audience on Monday that ideas from the Democratic Socialists of America are already part of the Democratic Party platform. He made these comments during an interview on PBS NewsHour. The governor said the party now shares views on climate change and energy security that used to be labeled as socialist.
Host Amna Nawaz asked if the party should work more with DSA candidates who are winning elections. She listed winners like Donavan McKinney in Michigan and Chris Rabb in Pennsylvania. Newsom replied that these ideas are already there.
Nawaz pushed back and noted a gap between party leaders and the new socialist candidates.
He argued that the party overwhelmingly supports Medicare for All and universal healthcare. He pointed out that the label is not as scary as people think.
Newsom recalled running against the Green Party twenty years ago. He said their platform sounded exactly the same as what he hears today. He believes this shift is healthy for the party and reflects a natural dialectic within their ranks.
On a different topic, Newsom warned that impeaching President Donald Trump again would be a mistake.
Despite his warning, he said Democrats should follow the facts wherever they lead. Regarding whether they ought to impeach the president upon reclaiming the House, he hesitated when questioned.
Newsom said the party should focus on real issues like $11 insulin and paid sick leave instead of political theater. He insisted that anyone who breaks the law or takes advantage of Americans must face consequences.
This interview aired on Monday according to Breitbart.
