Officials Give Update Following Shooting At Australian Beach

The horror of what unfolded at Bondi Beach during a Hanukkah celebration should have stunned the world into silence — but instead, it’s raised a flurry of questions that Australia’s leadership seems reluctant to answer. On Sunday, two gunmen opened fire on a crowd of Jewish families gathered to light the first candle of Hanukkah. It was a direct, deliberate act of antisemitic terror. Sixteen dead. Forty wounded. And a national reckoning that’s already being deflected into talking points about gun control and candlelight.


The suspects, identified on social media as Naveed Akram — a 24-year-old with known extremist ties — and Khaled Al-Nablusi from Sidon, carried out the worst antisemitic massacre on Australian soil in modern history. But what’s more disturbing than the attack itself is what followed: nothing.

According to multiple eyewitnesses, including survivor Shmulik Scuri, there were four police officers present at the scene from the beginning of the shooting. And they did nothing. “They froze,” Scuri said. “Twenty minutes, there was four policemen there. Nobody give fire back. Nothing.”

Twenty minutes. Multiple magazine changes. Dozens of victims. And four armed officers unable — or unwilling — to engage.


The shooter’s rampage didn’t end until a fruit seller — a civilian — ran toward the gunfire, tackled one of the terrorists, and disarmed him, getting shot in the process. Only then, according to video evidence, did police begin to return fire.

How does that happen in a modern democracy? Four officers on site, trained and equipped, while two terrorists methodically murder innocent civilians at a religious celebration? That’s not just a failure of law enforcement — that’s a failure of command, preparation, and will.

And it gets worse.

Naveed Akram wasn’t an unknown extremist lurking in the shadows. He was already investigated by ASIO, Australia’s version of the FBI, back in 2019 for potential terror ties. He trained at the Al-Murad Institute, an Islamic center with ties to other flagged organizations, and was publicly praised in 2022 for mastering Quranic recitation. This was not a lone wolf. This was a known entity, with a history, connections, and a paper trail — and yet he was free, armed (legally, no less), and able to carry out an attack with military precision alongside his father.


And what was Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s big response? Light a candle.

Yes, really. The leader of a nation tells his people to put a candle in their windows, as though symbolism will do what his intelligence and police services failed to do: protect Jewish lives.

What’s more, the government is already deflecting toward the same tired solution: gun control. Never mind that all the weapons used in the attack were legally obtained under Australia’s already famously strict gun laws. The father, Sajid Akram, had a hunting license and was a member of a gun club. The system worked exactly as it was designed — and that’s the problem.


Instead of facing the hard truth — that their agencies allowed a known radical to legally arm himself and go on a killing spree — officials are retreating to legislative theater. Tighten gun laws, hold a vigil, say the right words. But no answers. No accountability.

Bondi Beach didn’t just expose a terror cell. It exposed a government that froze alongside its police officers. In their rush to be the world’s model for disarmament and tolerance, they forgot the one responsibility that matters most: protecting innocent people from evil when it comes knocking.
