Patel Issues Statement Following Catholic School Shooting

The investigation into the Annunciation Catholic School massacre in Minneapolis has now taken a sobering and significant turn. FBI Director Kash Patel announced in a post on X that the attack will be investigated as a hate crime targeting Catholics.

That distinction matters. Too often, in the immediate aftermath of such tragedies, authorities hesitate to call things by their proper name. Not this time. Patel’s statement makes it clear: this was not simply “gun violence” in the abstract, or the result of vague “societal failures.” This was targeted evil, directed at a Catholic Mass filled with children.

The shooter, identified as 23-year-old Robert “Robin” Westman, was no stranger to the church. Court documents show his mother signed off on his legal name change from Robert to Robin at age 17, marking the beginning of his transgender identity. Just a few years later, he returned to the parish where he once studied, armed with three legally purchased firearms—a pistol, a rifle, and a shotgun.

Police say Westman fired from outside the church, shooting through stained-glass windows as children sat in pews praying. The worship service was marking the first week of school for Annunciation students. In the end, two children were killed, and 17 others wounded, including parishioners in their 80s.

Yeah. That seems to have gone silent lately. Huh.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara did not equivocate. He called the act “evil” and a “deliberate act of violence against innocent children and other people worshipping.” The description strips away any illusion of randomness—this was targeted, intentional, and designed to sow terror within a faith community.

This is a hate crime but targeting two MN state legislators was not? Fucking moron

The FBI’s decision to investigate this as both domestic terrorism and a hate crime is not just symbolic. It opens the door to an expansive probe into the shooter’s motives, ideology, and potential connections. Already, authorities have seized hundreds of pieces of evidence, including a manifesto that Westman apparently timed to release online. Early reviews of the writings suggest a stew of hate directed at multiple groups, but Patel’s announcement indicates a recognition that Catholics were specifically in the crosshairs.
