Protests Erupt In Paris

Paris and several other French cities are currently in turmoil following a dramatic shift in the country’s parliamentary elections. President Emmanuel Macron’s party suffered significant losses in the first round of elections, leading to widespread protests across France. The big winner in this round was Marine Le Pen’s right-wing populist party, the National Rally Alliance.

According to Politico, the National Rally garnered 34% of the vote, a substantial increase from the 18.7% they received in 2022. This puts them in a strong position to potentially win an outright majority in the upcoming run-off. Macron’s centrist Ensemble Coalition finished third with 20% of the vote, down from 25.8% in 2022. The far-left party secured 28.1%, which, while a strong showing, is not expected to be enough for a majority win next week.

In response to the election results, left-wing protesters, including socialists, communists, and pro-Palestinian groups, took to the streets. Thousands gathered at Paris’ Place de la République, with similar demonstrations reported in Strasbourg, Lyon, Nantes, and Lille. The protests quickly turned into riots, with participants expressing their discontent over the electoral gains made by the National Rally.

OSINTdefender, an open-source intelligence account, shared videos of the protests on X, noting the absence of French flags among the demonstrators. They described the situation as “Mass Demonstrations and Riots by Far-Left Groups alongside Islamists.” Another account highlighted the significant participation of ANTIFA and communists in the protests, emphasizing the intensity and scale of the unrest.
