In the middle of escalating tensions with Iran and growing frustration with NATO allies, the president took a detour that turned a geopolitical complaint into something far more personal. During a private White House lunch, Trump didn’t just criticize France’s lack of military support—he went straight at Emmanuel Macron himself, and then kept going.
“I call up France, Macron — whose wife treats him extremely badly,” Trump said, referencing viral footage that appeared to show Brigitte Macron striking her husband. Then he piled on: “Still recovering from the right to the jaw.”
That’s not policy language. That’s stand-up material dropped into a foreign policy briefing.
But underneath the jab, there’s a real point Trump is trying to drive home—and he’s been hammering it for days. The U.S. is deep into Operation Epic Fury, and according to Trump, many NATO allies are sitting on the sidelines. Some European countries have reportedly limited U.S. use of bases during the conflict, while also declining to send naval support to secure the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most critical oil routes in the world.

So Trump frames it his way: America does the fighting, others wait for the outcome.
He even acted it out—mocking Macron with a French accent, describing a call where he asked for immediate help, only to be told France would step in “after the war is won.” Whether that exchange happened exactly that way or not almost doesn’t matter. The performance is the message.
And the message is frustration.
At one point, Trump labeled NATO a “paper tiger,” which is about as direct a shot as you can take at a military alliance the U.S. helped build. He’s also floated—again—the idea of pulling the United States out altogether.
That’s not new rhetoric for him, but the timing gives it more weight. This isn’t a campaign rally. This is happening in the middle of an active military operation.
Macron, for his part, didn’t escalate. His response was controlled, dismissing Trump’s remarks as “neither elegant nor up to standard.” Diplomatic language for: this isn’t how serious leaders talk to each other.
But that contrast is the story.
