When a sitting Vice President of the United States singles out a YouTuber for outperforming Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists, you know the tides have turned — not just in media, but in accountability. That’s precisely what JD Vance did this week, praising independent journalist Nick Shirley for exposing what could be one of the most staggering fraud operations in American history — and he’s not wrong.
This dude has done far more useful journalism than any of the winners of the 2024 @pulitzercenter prizes. https://t.co/Ip6f9IedjL

Vance’s post came in response to Shirley’s now-viral 42-minute exposé, which he says uncovered over $110 million in fraud in a single day — all centered on sham childcare facilities, fake healthcare fronts, and massive abuse of taxpayer-funded aid in Minnesota.
At the heart of the scandal is the Somali-run daycare and healthcare ecosystem in Minneapolis, where Shirley’s footage showed ghost childcare centers receiving millions in taxpayer dollars with no children in sight. In one especially surreal moment, Shirley visited a facility called the “Quality Learning Center,” which couldn’t even spell the word “learning” correctly — advertising itself instead as a “learing” center. The signage was about the only visible indicator that the center was ever in business. Neighbors said they had never once seen children enter or exit the building.
When confronted, employees reportedly hid, shouted warnings not to open the door, and — falsely — accused Shirley and his team of being ICE agents.
It would be absurd if it weren’t so real — and so expensive.
According to City Journal, which corroborated much of Shirley’s reporting, federal counterterrorism officials now confirm that millions of taxpayer dollars from Minnesota have been laundered through fraudulent programs and funneled directly to Somalia, where they’ve allegedly ended up in the hands of Al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaeda-linked terror group.
Let that sink in:
“The largest funder of Al-Shabaab is the Minnesota taxpayer.”
This isn’t just bureaucratic bungling or bad oversight. It’s national security negligence, and it’s happening under the nose — or perhaps under the protection — of Governor Tim Walz.
Now the fallout is accelerating:
- Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN) is demanding answers from Walz after Shirley exposed a “daycare” receiving aid for 99 children, despite there being no signs of operation whatsoever.
- Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has confirmed an ongoing investigation into allegations that federal dollars were used to fund international terrorism.
- Education Secretary Linda McMahon has called for Walz’s resignation over massive education fraud, which reportedly includes similar abuse within the state’s college and vocational training systems.
Even as the mainstream press sits largely silent, Vice President Vance’s praise of Shirley shines a light on a deeper truth: America’s most consequential journalism is no longer being done in newsrooms — it’s happening on cell phones and social media, led by ordinary citizens who ask the questions legacy media refuses to touch.
Shirley, working without an editorial board or corporate backing, followed public records, knocked on doors, and documented everything. His findings haven’t just sparked headlines — they’ve triggered federal investigations, national security reviews, and now, a political reckoning that threatens to shake Minnesota’s Democratic leadership to its core.
And yet, the silence from the very institutions tasked with informing the public is deafening. No Pulitzer for Shirley. No glowing coverage. Just a camera, a mission, and an avalanche of fraud too large to ignore.
