Controversial beer brand Bud Light has recently come under fire for its alignment with self–identified transgender social media influencer Dylan Mulvaney and their alleged discriminatory practices. Now, a conservative advocacy organization, America First Legal, has filed a federal civil rights complaint against Anheuser–Busch, Bud Light‘s parent company, for their alleged violation of civil rights laws.
The complaint comes in response to Bud Light‘s attempts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) through initiatives such as a leadership accelerator program and a scholarship and internship program with the United Negro College Fund. According to America First Legal, these programs are discriminatory, as they favor Black, Latinx, and Native American applicants while omitting white and Asian applicants.
Anheuser–Busch CEO Brendan Whitworth issued a statement at the end of last week in response to the controversy but did not make mention of Mulvaney, transgenderism, or offer an apology to offended customers. America First Legal Vice President and General Counsel Gene Hamilton criticized Whitworth‘s response, stating, “All racial discrimination is wrong, and race–based employment programs or opportunities are antithetical to the American ideal. Equality under the law will never be achieved in the United States if its largest corporations are permitted to engage in blatant discrimination against certain groups of citizens.”
The company‘s DEI efforts are not a new phenomenon, as Anheuser–Busch has a history of caving to pressure campaigns from the LGBTQ movement. This includes a demonstration two years ago in which activists poured beverages distributed by Anheuser–Busch into a gutter to criticize donations the company made to lawmakers who sought to limit the spread of radical gender theory among young people. The firm also has conducted outreach to LGBTQ consumers through marketing campaigns and other internal diversity efforts.
It remains to be seen whether America First Legal‘s complaint against Anheuser–Busch will be successful, but it is clear that the company‘s DEI efforts have caused considerable backlash and that their discriminatory practices are being called into question. Bud Light‘s reputation has taken a hit as a result, and it is likely that the company will have to make some changes in order to repair its public image.
