In an attempt to blend politics with pop culture, a group of female Democratic lawmakers participated in a Super Smash Bros.-themed promotional video that was meant to exude strength, unity, and girl power—but instead, it landed with all the force of a half-hearted slap.

The video, originally posted on TikTok by influencer Sulhee Jessica Woo, featured Democratic congresswomen posing in “fighter” stances, complete with their personal stats and dramatic music in the background. What was meant to be a playful, empowering message turned into a cringe-inducing spectacle, drawing immediate mockery across social media.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) made an appearance, noted as “New York’s 14th Congressional District; youngest woman + Latina to be elected to the House; Trekkie.” Meanwhile, Rep. Katherine Clark (D-MA), the House Minority Whip, was described as “not into hair dye.” Other lawmakers, like Rep. Lauren Underwood (D-IL), had equally unusual “stats,” including “hates balloons.”
I literally wrote a piece this morning headlined, “Democrats’ Biggest Problem Right Now Is That They Are Out Of Touch And Uncool.”
I rest my case. https://t.co/uCfdQ7pivt https://t.co/uE7vZtIFgU

While the video aimed to celebrate Women’s History Month and Democratic “fighters,” the execution left many questioning what, exactly, these women were fighting for. Critics wasted no time in ridiculing the attempt, particularly on X (formerly Twitter).
Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) took a direct shot, replying to the video with an application to clown college. Journalist Mark Hemingway declared, “I literally wrote a piece this morning headlined, ‘Democrats’ Biggest Problem Right Now Is That They Are Out Of Touch And Uncool.’ I rest my case.”
This is at a level of abject absurdity that always makes me think I must be missing something, that it can’t just be what it is. But sometimes a pipe is just a pipe. https://t.co/GAskJD3Ni6

Former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer kept his reaction brief but telling: “Oh my goodness.”
David Marcus summed up the reaction best: “This is at a level of abject absurdity that always makes me think I must be missing something, that it can’t just be what it is. But sometimes a pipe is just a pipe.”
