Hunter Biden’s attorney Christopher Clark has withdrawn from legal representation of the president’s son in the ongoing federal probe into his finances and tax matters. This was revealed days after a plea deal with government prosecutors fell apart in Delaware.
According to The Hill, the attorney’s withdrawal is due to the upcoming legal battle concerning the collapsed plea agreement. With Clark being a “percipient witness” of these matters, he has chosen to step back from the case to avoid any potential conflicts.
Despite the departure of one of Hunter Biden’s lawyers, he is still represented by longtime DC attorney Abbe Lowell who spoke out on CBS’ “Face the Nation” over the weekend. Lowell expressed his position that this case should be handled on the facts and evidence instead of politics.
“One, they wrote something and weren’t clear what they meant. Two, they knew what they meant, and misstated it to counsel. Or third, they changed their view as they were standing in court in Delaware,” Lowell said. “I’m confident that if this prosecutor does what has been done for the last five years, look at the facts, the evidence, and the law, then the only conclusion can be what the conclusion was on July 26.”
In July, a plea agreement between Biden and the prosecutors had been reportedly reached. This agreement would allow Biden to plead guilty to his tax case while obtaining a “diversion” agreement on the separate gun case. Yet, after the IRS raised its whistleblower complaint, the deal fell apart prior to the appointed court date.
Currently, former president Donald Trump is facing just over 90 counts after his indictment in Georgia. Meanwhile, Republicans, such as Lindsey Graham and Ted Cruz have defended their former president, claiming he should be held to account at the ballot box instead of a “bunch of liberal jurisdictions” jailing him.
On the other side, Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY) appeared on CNN Sunday, where he purportedly spoke on Biden’s case. Goldman maintained the law should be applied while stipulating that Hunter Biden should be prosecuted if found guilty of criminal activity.
With the 2024 presidential election looming, the gravity of the cases against both presidents’ sons looms large, illuminating the importance of weighing the facts accordingly in each case and using the application of the law to seek justice. It remains to be seen how all of this will play out in the court process, and, ultimately, in the upcoming election.
