House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday took the media to task for failing to ask questions related to Joe Biden’s alleged storage of classified documents outside of an authorized “SCIF” (sensitive compartmented information facility).
“Has anyone ever asked the current president why would he have a classified document outside of the SCIF from his Senate days? Has he ever been confronted with that question?” McCarthy asked during a gaggle with reporters in the Capitol.
McCarthy added, “I haven‘t had you ask me one question about the current president having classified documents. I haven‘t had you ask me one question about why the current president, as a senator, why he would even have a classified document. Does that raise any questions to you?”
One of the reporters attempted to challenge McCarthy, defending Biden by noting that the former senator “turned over” the documents. But as McCarthy pointed out, Biden’s lawyers have been less than transparent about the incident, and the documents in question were initially found at Mar–a–Lago.
“I‘ve always said equal justice,” McCarthy said. “So my question back to you is: Is it equal or fair? Have you ever asked the question to the current president, ‘As a senator, why would you even have that document outside of the SCIF?’ Has anyone answered that question?”
During a Fox News segment on Tuesday, commentator Marc Thiessen made a compelling case that many of the facts presented in the Justice Department’s indictment of Donald Trump could be read as if they applied to Biden.
“If you read the first dozen pages of this indictment, almost everything in there could be applied to Joe Biden,” Thiessen said. He then quizzed a producer about each statement within the indictment, demonstrating that the details not only fit, but may even be more applicable to Biden than to Trump.
It’s worth noting that the Justice Department has yet to release any official statement about Biden’s potential transgressions. And while McCarthy is not the first GOP critic to demand answers from Biden, he stands out as one of the few elected officials to do so.
In the absence of a formal investigation, it’s up to the media to question Biden. And according to McCarthy, they’re falling short in their search for an answer.
