The passing of Pat Robertson, the iconic Christian evangelist and GOP presidential nominee in 1988, was announced on Thursday, and it has sparked a vigorous reaction both of celebration and of reflection from the public.
The 93–year–old had spent decades as a well–known television presence, via his show “The 700 Club”, and his involvement in Republican politics late in life.
On one side of the spectrum, Robertson’s critics have seized the opportunity to celebrate his passing. A Facebook post soon after Robertson’s death made clear the feelings of some, while social media was soon flooded with caustic comments from detractors.
On the other side, some have looked back fondly and offered few words, due to Robertson’s history as a global evangelical figure and his influence on religion in Republican politics.
Robertson led a rather remarkable life. He had been the president of the Christian Broadcasting Network since 1966, and he was the driving force behind what turned it into one of the world’s most successful religious networks.
He had been active for over 50 years through his “700 Club” show, and in his later years, he gave many economic and political opinions that brought both praise and criticism from all sides.
Robertson stepped down from his TV program in 2021, with his son Gordon taking over. He and his wife Dede, who was a founding board member of CBN, had four children, 14 grandchildren, and 24 great–grandchildren. Dede passed away last year at the age of 94.
Due to the huge impact, Robertson had in religious circles and the political arena, everyone from single individuals to large organizations has spoken out about his passing.
Although Robertson did not reach the White House during his brief run for president in 1988, his influence has carried on over the years, in large part due to his unique ability to connect with millions of viewers around the world.
He rose to prominence during a time when religion was heavily intertwined with politics and provided a platform for his many conservative views. Although Robertson has certainly been targeted for his controversial statements, his longtime fans will no doubt honor his legacy in religious and political discourse.
