Update On Alleged Gunman At Trump Club

Ryan Wesley Routh, the 58-year-old man accused of pointing an AK-47 at former President Donald Trump at his West Palm Beach golf course, has a lengthy criminal history that stretches back decades. The incident, which is being treated as an apparent assassination attempt, took place Sunday afternoon at Trump International Golf Club. Authorities say Secret Service agents fired at Routh after spotting him aiming the weapon through a chain-link fence just one hole ahead of where Trump was playing.

Routh, originally from North Carolina, has a record of arrests dating back to the 1990s. His past includes charges for drug possession, driving without a license, and other minor offenses. More notably, in 2002, he was involved in a three-hour standoff with police in North Carolina after barricading himself in his roofing company’s office following a traffic stop in which he had reached for a gun. This history, combined with his recent actions, has raised serious concerns about his motives.

After moving to Hawaii in 2017, Routh launched a construction company focused on building housing for the homeless, according to a LinkedIn profile linked to him. However, this recent episode suggests a more troubling turn in his behavior. Officials investigating the incident have been quick to point out that this was no random encounter. As one official noted, “This does not appear to be some random guy with an AK-47 walking outside Trump’s club.”

The attempted attack unfolded when Secret Service agents spotted Routh along a fence bordering the sixth hole of the golf course. Armed with an AK-47, a Go-Pro camera, and two backpacks, Routh was observed by the agents, who opened fire when they saw him lift the weapon. Routh fled the scene in an SUV but was soon apprehended. Fortunately, Trump was safely escorted off the course.

In the wake of the incident, Trump’s campaign swiftly reassured the public that the former president was unharmed. Trump himself addressed the situation on social media, writing, “There were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumors start spiraling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND WELL!” He added his characteristic defiance, “Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER SURRENDER!” expressing gratitude to his supporters and pledging continued resilience.

Fox News confirmed details of the confrontation, noting that the Secret Service acted immediately upon seeing Routh raise his weapon. The quick response led to Routh’s capture and the recovery of his weapon and other materials left behind.
