The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Assistant Secretary for Health, Admiral Rachel Levine, declared that this summer should be a “Summer of Pride,” as Pride month draws to an end.
Admiral Levine, the first openly transgender four–star admiral in the armed forces, celebrated the change of season from Pride month to what many see as a celebration of alternate sexualities. In his remarks, Levine said, “Happy Pride! Happy Pride Month, and actually — let’s declare it a summer of Pride. Happy Summer of Pride.”
The call for a Summer of Pride acknowledges the history of the month–long celebration which began in 1969 – as a commemoration of the Stonewall riots of late June, when activists rioted against police raids on the pub. Since then, Pride month has grown into an entire season of festivities in many American cities.
The Biden administration has observed Pride month across all federal government departments, including military and diplomatic institutions both domestically and internationally. This is not Levine’s first time in the news. Last year, as Breitbart News reported, Levine was sworn in as the first openly transgender four–star admiral in the armed forces.
Levine has been the subject of criticism for her views on gender transition, including a refusal to limit “gender–affirming drugs and surgery” for minors.
The Summer of Pride appears to be unfolding across America as cities celebrate the lives of LGBTQ+ citizens, marking a change in attitude on what has been considered a taboo subject for so long. Though Pride Month was created to mark a moment of liberation and defiance, the tradition has become a lively celebration of one of the most visible parts of the LGBTQ+ community.
This “Summer of Pride” is a reflection of the transformation in popular opinion and the understanding of what it means to be LGBTQ+ today. It is a movement of acceptance, understanding, and love – sending a loud and clear message that all people should be treated with equal respect.
