California Governor Gavin Newsom dismissed allegations of President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, using his father’s name to secure lucrative business deals during an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash this week. Newsom asserted that this type of influence peddling is common and not exclusive to politics.
During the interview, Bash confronted Newsom about Republican efforts to launch an impeachment inquiry into President Biden. She highlighted reports that Hunter Biden attempted to use his father’s name for personal gain and that then-candidate Joe Biden joined phone calls with Hunter’s business associates.
Newsom responded by stating he is not well-informed enough about the situation to make a judgment. He noted that if this is the new standard for wrongdoing, then many individuals in various industries are guilty of the same offense. Newsom added that while he does not condone this behavior, it is not unique in politics.
Newsom further stated that launching an impeachment inquiry over these allegations is absurd. He described the current political atmosphere as resembling “student government,” with government shutdown threats and a focus on trivial matters. The governor also criticized the Republican party for their lack of focus on important issues, stating, “This is a joke.”
He emphasized that an impeachment inquiry would distract from important matters and described it as a perversion of the Founding Fathers’ intentions. Newsom highlighted the ongoing debt ceiling debate and the possibility of another government shutdown, stating that this is a symptom of the childish approach to governing.
Newsom concluded the interview by urging politicians to focus on more critical issues, such as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and economic recovery. He also emphasized the need for unity and bipartisan cooperation to address these challenges effectively.
The governor’s remarks sparked a debate over the seriousness and validity of the allegations against Hunter Biden. Some defended the president’s son, arguing that his actions were not unusual, while others called for further investigation and accountability.
As the political landscape continues to be divided, it remains to be seen if any concrete action will be taken against Hunter Biden or if this controversy will fade away. However, Governor Newsom’s comments have shed light on the pervasive issue of influence-peddling, reminding politicians to prioritize the nation’s best interests over personal gain.
